Independence Park is located at 3945 N. Springfield Avenue in the neighborhood of Irving Park. The park is named after the annual 4th of July festivities held by the community residents. The park was founded in 1910 after residents formed their own park district and the field house, designed by Hatzfeld and Knox, was completed in 1914. Chicago artist M.R. Decker painted the WPA-FAP mural “May the Spirit of 1776 Live On” in 1937. The painting shows a fallen Revolutionary War soldier being lifted from the battlefield by a figure representing the spirit of independence. >>
